The Heroes are the legendary warriors of Gallowmere. Due to their heroic deeds, they were chosen to inhabit the Hall of Heroes in the afterlife, where they spend an eternity resting, feasting and exchanging tales of their greatest victories.

Chalice challenge[]

After Sir Daniel Fortesque is resurrected from the dead by his archnemesis, the evil wizard Zarok, the mythical heroes of Gallowmere set a challenge for him in the form of the Chalices of Souls. Dan was to prove himself their equal by filling and collecting all of them. After having done so, the Gargoyles gave Dan permanent access to the Hall of Heroes.[1]

Known members[]

Canny Tim[]

Captain Fortesque! It's me, Canny Tim. Does the battle go well?

– Canny Tim to Sir Dan, MediEvil

Timberly[1] (born Kimberly), better known as Canny Tim, is the first hero Dan meets in the Hall of Heroes and his former second in command. Tim appears in MediEvil, MediEvil: Resurrection, the 2019 remake of MediEvil and MediEvil: Fate's Arrow.

History[]

Background[]

In 1285, King Peregrin held the 49th Gallowmere Games, an annual contest where the most skilled warriors from the land would compete for top honors. This was the year Canny Tim entered the competition and won top prizes in all the archery categories of the event. The king was so impressed, he made Canny Tim a marksman of a crossbowman part of the cavalry led by Sir Dan, as well as Dan's second in command.[1]

A year later, Tim killed Zarok's champion, Lord Kardok, in the Battle of Gallowmere by shooting him in the eye from a thousand yards away, thus earning a place in the Hall of Heroes after death. According to one account, Tim's death came prematurely at the hands of Zarok himself.[2]

MediEvil[]

After collecting a Chalice of Souls, Daniel can speak to Canny Tim, who tells Dan about killing Lord Kardok (which annoys Dan, as he was killed by an arrow as well) and offers him the crossbow as aid after quickly taking back the remark. Once Dan collects another Chalice, Tim gives him a Life Bottle without knowledge of its actual use. Other sources claim that Tim never gave Dan a Life Bottle but instead gave him the Hero's Crossbow after collecting seven Chalices.

MediEvil: Fate's Arrow[]

In 1286, Canny Tim aids the undead Sir Dan in thwarting Zarok's attempt at conquering Gallowmere through the living Dan's incompetence. Tim procures Dirk Steadfast's Magic Sword for Dan to help slay the Jabberwocky attacking King Peregrin's Castle and later helps Dan fight off an attack by Zarok. Tim also reveals that she is female, cross-dressing in order to be allowed into the king's army.

Canny Tim is revealed to be a woman in Fate's Arrow.

According to Jason Wilson, the Heroes were designed very quickly for MediEvil with some of them being based on the original team members.[3] It is unknown if Canny Tim was based on a team member or not. In a Q&A about the MediEvil: Fate's Arrow comic, Chris Sorrell explained his reasoning for reconceptualising Canny Tim as a female character:

Well obviously the idea is that she always was, but was just hiding the fact in order to fight alongside her male peers. Ok, I admit we never really thought of her that way originally, but to be quite honest none of those guys ever had much depth. I loved some of them nevertheless, and I wanted to give one of my favorites a little more back-story. I liked the idea of doing something a little surprising, of adding another much needed female into the MediEvil world, and, like I say, of fleshing out the character a bit!

Trivia[]

  • Canny Tim is the only hero not mentioned in HEROES FROM HISTORY: A Retrospective, due to not being recognized as a hero outside the Hall of Heroes.
  • In HISTORY OF GALLOWMERE - Volume 4, it is written that Tim died in the first volley of arrows. However, this is actually how Sir Dan died instead.
  • "Canny" has several meanings, but given Tim's English accent, it is likely intended as an affectionate nickname.
  • Being Dan's second in command, Tim does not insult Dan like the other members of the Hall of Heroes.
  • Tim knows how to play the lute, as seen at the end of MediEvil.

Stanyer Iron Hewer[]

Here, take my WarHammer, it'll smash anything and it won't fall apart like a club - I only ever get to use it cracking walnuts around this place.

– Stanyer Iron Hewer, MediEvil

Stanyer Iron Hewer is a hero found in the Hall of Heroes.

History[]

Background[]

In addition to being the strongest man who ever lived Stanyer Iron Hewer was unsurpassed in his skill as a blacksmith. He was equally happy pounding on his anvil at home as he was pounding on someone's head in battle. It was said that his only fear was the end of the village smithy as the focus of manufacture in favor of more centralized units - as if!

MediEvil[]

Stanyer is the second hero Dan visits in the Hall of Heroes. He provides Dan with his hammer and two Chests of Gold.

Behind the Scenes[]

Development[]

His likeness in the PS4 remake was based on Jeff Nachbaur, who served as Executive Producer on the remake.

Trivia[]

  • Much like Canny Tim, he treats Dan with more respect than the other heroes do.
  • Stanyer knows how to play a recorder, as he can be seen playing one at the end of MediEvil.

Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver[]

Eh Mr.. Fortisskay - I wanna talk with you...

– Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver, MediEvil

Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver is a hero from MediEvil and MediEvil: Resurrection.

History[]

Background[]

Born a humble peasant to one of the nomadic tribes from the Eastlands, Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver gathered an army of horsemen and swept over half the civilized world. When he finally died (attempting a single handed attack on a garrison in the North while armed only with the spike on his helmet) he was the richest and most powerful peasant of his day.

MediEvil / MediEvil: Resurrection []

He speaks derogatorily of Dan and accuses him of "constantly rearranging the castle guard and playing croquet with the king" while he constantly had the slain strewn around him. Once Fortesque accepts his Axe, he exclaims "Drink deep in demon blood my proud beauty..." to it as a fond farewell.

Trivia[]

  • Given that Bloodmonath harkens from a nomadic tribe in the East, he is likely intended to be a Hun.
  • Like Woden the Mighty before him, Bloodmonath speaks ill of Daniel when they first speak, though it's more out of jealousy in his case, as opposed to the former's doubts about Sir Dan's credibility.
  • He pronounces Fortesque's name as "Fortisskay".

Behind the scenes[]

Development[]

According to Jason Wilson, no proper artwork of the heroes exists, as they were designed very quickly. Some of them are based on members of the development team.[5] ] ]

Notes[]

^a In the original MediEvil and its remake, Tim's death is only mentioned in HISTORY OF GALLOWMERE - Volume 4, which ascribes Sir Dan's actual death to Tim. It is unknown whether it is only the nature of Tim's death that is a fabrication or if Tim's death is fabricated altogether. The only direct account about Tim's death is in MediEvil: Resurrection, where Tim mentions being killed prematurely by Zarok.[2] However, this doesn't specify whether it was at the Battle of Gallowmere or not.
